Smørrebrød (smoerrebroed) typically has a base of "rugbrød", which is a sour-dough rye bread. Smørebrød is closely related to the Swedish smörgås and means 'spread bread' (smør is butter). Traditional toppings include smoked fish such as salmon; greenlandic prawns, pickled herrings, pork liver-paste, roastbeef with remoulade, chicken and asparagus salad as well as egg and tomato. Hundreds of combinations and varieties of smørrebrød are available. Smørrebrød is a lunch item in Scandinavia, and it is a healthy alternative to the "white" bread sandwich, since the rye bread is full of fibres and seeds.
